This story is related to an evil king of Rome and a kind Saint Valentine. Once upon a time there was a tyrannical king known as Claudius in Rome around the third century.

King Claudius Gothicus II of Rome believed that in place of a married soldier for war, a single i.e. unmarried bachelor soldier could become more appropriate and effective. The king believed that the attention of a married soldier is always engaged in the concern of the family and the soldier is not able to pay full attention during the war. For these reasons, King Claudius announced in the state that after today no soldier will marry, if he does so, he will be punished for it.

The soldiers were saddened by the announcement of the king.

All the soldiers were deeply saddened by this decision of King Claudius . This decision was wrong for all those soldiers who wanted to marry. But no soldier had the courage to stand against the king. And all the soldiers had to accept this decision compulsorily.

At the same time there used to be a saint in the room who was known for his kindness.

Saint Valentine did not like this decision of the king. After which Saint Valentine worked to secretly marry many young soldiers from King Claudius . Any soldier in the state who wanted to marry his girlfriend would take the help of saint valentine and valentine would secretly get those soldiers married. In this way Saint Valentine got many soldiers married secretly.

Valentine’s meeting with the jailer Asterius

Valentine had got many soldiers married secretly. But a time came when King Claudius came to know about this work of Saint Valentine. King Claudius sentenced Saint Valentine to death for his act and put him in prison. While in prison, one day a jailer named Asteriu s came to Saint Valentine.

Saint Valentine had a divine power which he used to cure the diseases of the people. When Jailor Asterius came to know about this, he went to Valentine, in fact Asterius had a daughter who was blind and wanted help from Asterius Valentine. Valentine was a kind saint who cured the blind daughter of the jailer Asterius with his powers.

Valentine’s day friendship and love with the daughter of Asterius

Valentine and the daughter of the jailer Asterius had now developed a good friendship. Gradually this friendship turned into love and both of them did not know when they fell in love with each other. The daughter of Asterius was shocked to think that the date of Valentine’s death was approaching. At last the moment came when Saint Valentine was to be hanged. Saint Valentine was hanged on 14 February.

Before his death, Saint Valentine asked the jailer for a pen and paper and on it he wrote a goodbye message for the jailer Asterius ‘s daughter. At the end of this message, Valentine had written “your valentine” . This is the word which is remembered by all the love birds today.
